Why Bedroom Vastu Matters in Indian Apartments
Many Indian home-buyers consider Vastu Shastra when selecting an apartment. The bedroom is key because it is linked to rest, health and relationships. Vastu principles are traditional beliefs, not guaranteed outcomes.
In compact city apartments, altering structure post-purchase is difficult. A Vastu-based checklist during site visits helps shortlist comfortable options early.
Best Directions for the Master Bedroom
Traditional Vastu suggests the master bedroom should occupy the southwest corner, associated with stability. Acceptable alternatives are south or west. The northeast corner is generally avoided, as that zone is linked to prayer or study.
Children’s bedrooms often suit the west or northwest; a guest bedroom may also fit the northwest. Use a phone compass during visits to confirm room-facing directions.
Bed Placement and Sleeping Direction
Vastu advises sleeping with the head south; east is also acceptable. A north-head position is generally avoided.
Check if room dimensions allow this alignment. Fixed wardrobes, windows, or AC slots may force a north-head orientation. Measure bed-wall length and note electrical-point positions. The bed should have a solid wooden headboard and not sit under a beam. In high-rises, false ceiling drops above the bed create a similar effect—look up from the proposed spot.
Colour and Décor Checks
Soft, earthy colours like light blue, green, pink, brown, or cream are common. Dark tones such as black or deep red are often avoided. Note existing wall colours during visits.
Mirrors opposite the bed are traditionally discouraged. Built-in wardrobe mirrors can be covered with a curtain at night. Check the wardrobe door position and reflection from the bed.
Electronics—TVs, chargers, routers—should ideally be kept away from the bed. Note switchboard and data-point locations; slots directly above the bedhead may need extra work.
Placement of Attached Bathrooms and Wardrobes
Vastu places attached bathrooms in the northwest or west. Northeast-corner bathrooms are generally avoided. During visits, confirm this layout; if the toilet seat faces east or north, some families reorient it during interiors. Keep bathroom doors closed when not in use.
Heavy wardrobes belong on the southwest wall; northeast-wall wardrobes are less desirable. Verify wardrobe positions, door swings, and fixed furniture early, as changing them later requires civil work.
