Chandigarh’s 2026 tenancy rules move rental agreements online and assign landlords and tenants a UIN for each tenancy.
Chandigarh has notified the Union Territory of Chandigarh Tenancy Rules, 2026, bringing rental agreements under an online system and assigning a Unique Identification Number (UIN) to landlords and tenants for each tenancy. MagicBricks News reported this on September 12, 2026.
What happened
The new rules operationalise the Assam Tenancy Act, 2021, which was extended to Chandigarh in place of the East Punjab Urban Rent Restriction Act, 1949.
Under the new system, every rental agreement will be placed online. Both the landlord and the tenant will receive a UIN linked to the tenancy.
Why it matters
The administration says the rules are intended to make renting more transparent, balanced and easier to manage in court. The online record and UIN will provide an identified reference for each tenancy.
Expert view
For people renting or letting out property in Chandigarh, the immediate change is the move to an online tenancy system. The UIN will identify the specific tenancy for both parties and may help them manage rental-related matters in court, in line with the stated purpose of the rules.
What buyers should check
Tenants and landlords should check that their rental agreement is placed on the new online system and that both parties receive the UIN for that tenancy. They should also verify that the agreement relates to the correct tenancy before relying on the record.
