CMRL has invited DPR tenders for proposed 27-km Kilambakkam-Chengalpattu and around 11-km Assisi Nagar-Wimco Nagar Metro extensions, with property impact linked to approvals and final station locations.
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has issued tenders to prepare detailed project reports (DPRs) for two proposed extensions: a 27-km line from Kilambakkam to Chengalpattu and an around 11-km stretch from Assisi Nagar to Wimco Nagar. What happened
CMRL has invited bids for the Kilambakkam-Chengalpattu DPR under Corridor 1 of Phase I. The proposed extension would continue the Chennai Airport-Kilambakkam corridor towards Chengalpattu.
CMRL submitted the DPR for the 15.46-km Chennai Airport-Kilambakkam corridor to the state government in February 2025. The corridor, estimated to cost Rs 9,335 crore, would have 13 stations and connect Chennai Airport with the Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus at Kilambakkam. Approval from the Centre is still awaited.
In North Chennai, CMRL issued the DPR consultancy tender for the Assisi Nagar-Wimco Nagar extension on August 1, 2026. The tender covers an around 11-km addition to Corridor 5 of Phase II, with an estimated consultancy cost of Rs 88 lakh. The proposed stretch would connect with the existing Wimco Nagar Metro station.
Why it matters
If the Chennai Airport-Kilambakkam corridor and the Kilambakkam-Chengalpattu extension move ahead, Metro access could extend further along the GST Road corridor. The area has residential and industrial development, while Mahindra World City has more than 65 global companies. The average property rate on the GST Road market is about Rs 6,027 per sq ft.
The southern locations to watch include Kilambakkam, Urapakkam, Guduvancheri, Maraimalai Nagar and Chengalpattu. In North Chennai, the proposed extension would add to connectivity in the Wimco Nagar and Tiruvottiyur-Ennore belt, which has industrial and residential areas.
Wimco Nagar already has Metro and suburban rail access. Its average property rate is around Rs 8,211 per sq ft. CMRL also invited bids in December 2025 for around 1 lakh sq ft of commercial space at the Wimco Nagar Depot Metro Station. The planned uses include retail, offices, supermarkets, food courts, fitness centres and other services.
The two DPR tenders are part of wider expansion plans. Centre approval is awaited for the Airport-Kilambakkam, Koyambedu-Pattabiram via Avadi and Poonamallee-Sunguvarchatram extensions. Other proposals include the Lighthouse-High Court and Tambaram-Guindy-Velachery corridors. The 20.6-km Chennai Port-Maduravoyal Double-Decker Elevated Corridor is also planned to connect the port with the Chennai Bypass.
